Some 74 percent of more than 200 delegates surveyed by leading IT Service Management software supplier Axios Systems (www.axiossystems.com) at the recent annual conference in Brighton of the UK IT Service Management Forum (itSMF) said they were attracted by such a facility. 

 

“This is powerful evidence of the growing demand for automating IT asset management but only a minority of organizations have seized the initiative so far,” said Ailsa Symeonides, Sales and Marketing Director of Axios Systems. 

 

She added: “There is still a general feeling that you do an audit once and the task is over - but the job has really only just begun. The more you automate the changes fed into the system, the better. It also fits in very well with ITIL® (IT Infrastructure Library) philosophy.”

 

Symeonides said that automating configuration audits significantly increased an organization’s efficiency and effectiveness, and could yield substantial cost savings. Audit tools could determine exactly what software is installed and identify the most critical aspects of hardware configuration. This meant a greater coverage of audited configuration items with the resources available. Staff could concentrate on handling the exceptions rather than physically carrying out audits. 

 

“Many organizations don’t fully realize how much work is involved in manually keeping their configuration database up to date,” she went on. “It involves a considerable amount of human effort and a year on you have to repeat the same exercise to get a current view. That costs an incredible amount of money. In these circumstances it is not surprising that IT professionals are so keen on getting automated pictures of some of their organization’s biggest investments.” Symeonides said the agreement was another significant milestone in the development of the Edinburgh-based company which has been voted the UK's best Help Desk and IT Service Management Software vendor for the past two years in a row. 

 

Auto-discovery tools help ensure that organizations comply with software licensing - for instance, rules set by the Federation Against Software Theft (FAST). One in four of the respondents in Axios’ itSMF conference survey said their current ITSM solution was not FAST-compliant. 

 

Industry research company Gartner recently reported that up to 30 percent of the cost of running PCs and servers could be saved after a software asset audit, reconciliation and inventory management process had been completed.
