Improved computer support is on route for the Highways Agency, following a decision to upgrade its IT Service Management system.
The Highways Agency - which operates and maintains the strategic road network in England - is installing assyst by Axios Systems (www.axiossystems.com) in its Business Information Systems division in Leeds to monitor IT incidents and problems and track changes to the IT infrastructure which includes some 3,500 PCs.
The organization’s responsibilities are about to increase substantially with 1,200 uniformed traffic officers, supported by 300 staff in regional control centres, due to patrol motorways by the end of 2005 to free up police for other tasks. The move is aimed at minimising hold-ups and delays on the network.
"We wanted an integrated solution which offered full IT Service Management, including control of assets, with all the benefits derived from that," said Brian Poole, the Agency’s Programme, Change and Configuration Manager. "We will now be able to be more pro-active in searching for problems and their causes, maximising continuity of service. Staff will have access to the same data source and sharing information should help provide a more reliable IT service."
Poole said assyst was chosen because of Axios Systems’ leading market position and the fact that the integrated solution interfaced with the Agency’s SQL database and other systems. "We also liked the ease of reporting which assyst offers and the colour coded graphic display of configuration items which shows the impact of changes," he added. "Compatibility with ITIL® (The IT Information Library - internationally accepted guidelines for best practice in IT Service Management) was also a factor since we are adopting this across the Business Information Systems division."
Ailsa Symeonides, Axios Systems’ Sales and Marketing Director, commented: "We are delighted that the Highways Agency has decided that assyst is best placed to put it in the fast lane for better IT support. Axios looks forward to playing its part in driving forward the exciting improvements planned for England’s strategic roads."
