Female computing stars get ready to shine

March 22, 2005

Tens of thousands of girls will compete for the title of the UK’s top female computing student in the fifth year of the awards, the organizers have announced.

The Axios ‘A’ Star Awards, organized by global Help Desk and IT Service Management software specialist Axios Systems, are a nationwide initiative to encourage more girls to study and take up careers in computing and redress the male domination of the industry.

Created in 2000, they are based on ‘A’ Level and GCSE computing and ICT examinations (Advanced Higher and Standard Grades in Scotland), with girls scoring the highest marks going through to a tiebreaker final held over the Internet. More than 63,000 girls were entered automatically in last year’s event through sitting the relevant exams.

“We are thrilled to be organizing these Awards for the fifth year in succession,” said event founder Ailsa Symeonides, Sales and Marketing Director of Axios Systems. “Transforming the stereotypical image of IT as a job for ‘anorak’ males will take time, which is why we have taken this on as a long term commitment.”

“The Axios ‘A’ Star Awards have developed into the UK’s most prestigious competition for female IT students and we are determined to make them even bigger and better in 2005,” Mrs Symeonides added.

Regional events are expected to be held in September, with the UK final taking place in London towards the end of the year. Last year the final Awards were presented by TV and radio presenter Katy Hill.

Prizes will include cash and laptop computers.
